Before You Get Started

Here are a few things to know before you begin:

• Pick your house colors (scarlet + gold, green + silver, blue + bronze, yellow + black) to echo the classic Hogwarts palette—or go tonal for subtle mischief.
• Measure your dog carefully: neck, chest (widest point), and back length. This ensures a neat fit without tightness around the legs.
• Choose a smooth, non-itchy yarn. Super bulky wool blends block nicely and show stitches clearly.
• Keep the edge elastic. A stretchy cast-on and bind-off help the collar and body glide on easily.
• Instagram tip: Block your sweater so the stripes and letters lie flat—your photos will look crisp and share‑worthy.

Inspired By The Harry Potter Movies

Make your dog their own ‘mischief-managed’ sweater with this easy knitting pattern.

If there is any dog that knows how to create mischief all day every day it is our dog, Jason!

Jason looked every inch the Weasley at Hogwarts in this Harry Potter-inspired sweater.

Always ready for getting up to no good this cowl perfectly matches my dog’s Gryffindor dog cowl. – Dog Cowl Pattern (Easy Knit)

A note about the yarn I used

I used – Sirdar Hayfield Super Chunky with Wool in the colors 0053 (Hollyhocks) and 0065 (Hay Bale) to make this sweater.

To substitute this yarn you can use any super bulky yarn weight 06. 

Yarn substitutes – Lion Brand Hometown USA or Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.

Size Information

The Supplies You Need

Yarn

• 3 x skeins of super bulky/super chunky/14-ply yarn.
• I used Hayfield Super Chunky With Wool in shade 0053 – Hollyhocks (main color).
• Yarn in a coordinating color (mustard) for the stitched letter in the same yarn weight.
• Yarn Weight Guide (+ Conversion Chart)

Needles

• Set of 10.00mm (US 15) 20″ or 24″ circular knitting needles
• Set of 10mm (US 15) straight knitting needles

Please note – if you are using circular knitting needles, you only need to use those as you can knit both flat and in the round.

Circular needles are needed to knit the sleeves in the round.

Notions

• Tape measure
• Darning needle
• Scissors
• Stitch markers

Knitting Abbreviations And Terms (US And UK)

• Approx = Approximately
• Beg = Beginning
• Cont = Continue(ing)
• K = Knit
• K2tog = Knit the next 2 stitches together
• P = Purl
• Rem = Remaining
• Rep = Repeat
• Rib = 1 knit st, 1 purl st
• 2 x 2 Ribbing = 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches
• Rnd(s) = Round(s)
• St(s) = Stitch(es)

Pattern Instructions

Back Piece >

• With 10 mm (US 15) straight needles, and the super bulky yarn/Hayfield–hollyhocks yarn cast on 30 sts.
• 1st Row – K2, P2 – rep to the end of the row.
• Cont to work every row in K2, P2 ribbing until the piece measures – 4.5 inches from the CO edge.
• Next row – Knit.
• Next row – Purl.
• Continue to knit 1 row/purl 1 row (stockinette stitch) until the piece measures 25.5 inches from the cast-on edge.
• Then work in 2 x 2 ribbing (K2, P2) to finish the back edge – K2, P2 for 2.5 inches.
• Cast off in rib.

Chest Piece >

• With 10 mm (US 15) straight needles, and the super bulky yarn/Hayfield – hollyhocks yarn cast on 16 sts.
• 1st Row – K2, P2 – rep to the end of the row.
• Cont to work every row in K2, P2 ribbing until the piece measures – 4.5 inches from the CO edge.
• Next row – Knit.
• Next row – Purl.
• Continue to knit 1 row/purl 1 row (stockinette stitch) until the piece measures 20.5 inches from the CO edge.
• Then work in 2 x 2 ribbing (K2, P2) to finish the back edge – K2, P2 for 2.5 inches.
• Cast off in rib.

Making Up >

• To make up the sweater – first, stitch the letter of our choice onto the back piece using a coordinating colored yarn.
• This is achieved by stitching over the V-shaped stitches you can see in the knitted fabric.
• Then place the back piece and chest piece together with the right sides back to back.
• After that stitch from the neck down on both sides for 8 inches.
• Leave 7-inch leg holes then stitch again for 8 inches.
• Weave in any loose ends, then prepare to make the sleeves.

Sleeves >

• Make sure the sweater is inside out ->
• With 10 mm (US 15) circular needles, the hollyhocks yarn pick up and knit 30 sts around the leg hole.
• Knit every row until the sleeve measures 3 inches from the picked-up stitch’s edge. Cast off.
• Weave in all loose ends.
• Repeat for the second leg hole.

The Harry Potter Font

Embroidered Letter >

• For the embroidered letter, I looked at the Harry Potter font and sketched out my J.
• I marked it out on the sweater with stitch markers as a guide, then began to stitch it with mustard yarn over the top of the V-shaped stitches.
• Some of you knitters out there will probably be able to adjust the pattern to make the letter intarsia.
