Crochet Heart Coaster Pattern (Free Printable)
THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS THAT SUPPORT HANDY LITTLE ME CONTENT AND FREE PATTERNS.If you love small, satisfying crochet projects, this crochet heart coaster is going to be your new favorite make.
It’s quick, cute, and perfect for using up little bits of cotton yarn, plus it makes an adorable handmade gift (or a quirky pop of color for your own coffee table).
This pattern uses simple stitches with a few taller stitches to shape the curves of the heart.
Add a contrasting border, and you’ve got a coaster that looks way fancier than the time it takes to crochet it.
And yes, this one is also available as a free printable, so you can keep it in your project bag and crochet on the go.

Before You Get Started
Here are a few quick tips so your heart turns out neat and nicely shaped:
- Cotton yarn is ideal for coasters because it’s absorbent and holds its shape well.
- You’ll start with a magic ring. If you prefer, you can substitute with the ch-2 ring method (notes in the FAQ).
- The coaster is worked in joined rounds, so you’ll slip stitch to join at the end of each round unless the round ends with a specific join instruction.
- If your heart looks a little wobbly at first, totally normal. A quick wet block makes it crisp and symmetrical.
Materials
You’ll need:
- 4 mm crochet hook / US G-6
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Yarn: 100% cotton (approx 30g / 51m / 55.8 yds)
- I used Red (Yarn A) and White (Yarn B) cotton.
- Scraps of Rico Creative Cotton Aran and The Cotton from We Are Knitters.
Optional (nice to have):
- Stitch marker (helpful if you like tracking your first stitch)
- Blocking mat + pins (even a towel works!)
Size and Gauge Info
Finished size: approx 6.5 in at the widest point and 4.5 in tall.
Gauge (not critical): 18 sts / 24 rows in single crochet
Gauge isn’t really necessary for this project; your coaster just needs to lie flat and look heart-shaped.
If yours comes out larger/smaller, it’s usually just yarn thickness or tension, and it’ll still work as a coaster.

Abbreviations (US terms)

- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sc = single crochet

FAQ
What yarn is best for a crochet heart coaster?
Cotton yarn is best because it’s absorbent, heat-tolerant, and keeps its shape.
Acrylic can work, but it may not absorb condensation well and can get warm under mugs.
Do I have to match gauge?
Nope. Gauge isn’t important here—just aim for a coaster that lies flat.
If it curls, try a looser tension or go up a hook size.
I don’t know how to make a magic ring. What can I do instead?
Use this alternative: ch 2, work the stitches for Round 1 into the second ch from the hook, then join. (Your center may be a little more open, but it still looks cute.)
My heart looks lopsided. Did I mess up?
Probably not. Hearts are dramatic.
A quick wet block usually fixes uneven curves, especially around the top bumps and the point.
Can I make these bigger or smaller?
Yes, use thicker yarn and a bigger hook for larger coasters, or thinner cotton for smaller ones.
The stitch pattern stays the same.
