THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS THAT SUPPORT HANDY LITTLE ME CONTENT AND FREE PATTERNS.The crisp colder months are finally here!
With cozy nights in knitting, walks in the park, hot chocolate and wearing oversize knits, this is by far my most favourite time of the year.
Following on from a post I wrote about creating a spring/summer maternity capsule wardrobe, I now share with you my top picks for a fall/winter maternity capsule wardrobe.
I stuck to a few stores that are affordable yet reliable for quality; ASOS, Zara, Gap, Topshop and Next.
Maternity Do’s + Don’ts
Here are a few do’s and don’t’s to remember when creating your fall/winter maternity capsule collection;
DON’T just buy clothes that you like in larger sizes, they will make you look bigger and the fit will be really off.
Invest in some stylish pieces that you can mix and match with your go-to accessories, showing off your personal style and giving you a flattering shape at the same time!
DO have a number of basic items that you will use again and again. For example vest tops and jeans.
The idea is to mix and match them with other key pieces, so you can create outfits for any occasion.
DO try and choose neutral shades for the core of your fall/winter pregnancy wardrobe.
Day dresses worn over black leggings, dark jeans and knitwear in grey, vest tops in black and white are all perfect for the winter.
You can add some colour, brights if it is your style or warm berry reds.
DON’T spend a lot of money – try to be selective and get your basics, with the addition of a warm winter coat and some gorgeous cozy knits.
You can add some beautiful accessories and you will be all set!

Here is a breakdown of what you will need to create a fall/winter capsule wardrobe >
The Party Dress
For any party you are going to attend this season, make sure you have a show-stopping outfit!
There are so many maternity party dresses to choose from, in an array of fall colours.
The Day Dress
A comfortable day dress is a must!
To be worn for errands or to work, a long-sleeved grey dress like this would look great over leggings with boots.
The Jeans / Leggings
Jeans and leggings are a staple in your fall/winter capsule wardrobe.
Dark jeans will look great paired with neutrals and tan boots.
They are also super slimming. Leggings are a great option for wearing underneath tunics or dresses, they are also super comfy.
The Shirt
Comfortable shirts are another must-have in your maternity wardrobe.
Long sleeves in neutral colours will work best and go with everything.
A long shirt will also look great over jeans or leggings.
Good quality cotton shirts are great, they will make you feel really cosy.
The Vest
Maternity vests are great, often coming with built-in support.
They are great for layering, to wear with jeans, pants or leggings.
Throw over an oversized sweater and layer up on those cold days.
The Tunic
A tunic can add some colour into your maternity wardrobe, thrown over jeans or leggings.
The tunic can look smart or casual, depending on the look that you want.
The Trousers
Trousers are a staple for your working wardrobe while you are pregnant.
Choose a pair (or a couple of pairs) that will offer you both comfort and style.
Try to get a pair with a comfortable jersey panel or bump supportive bandeau.
The Sweater
A warm cozy knit sweater is another must-have for fall/winter.
There are so many choices that it will be hard not to buy a few!
Buy in neutral colours, so that they will go with your other maternity picks.
The Cardigan
An oversized cardigan is a good idea for layering.
When you pair with your vests/tops and start to heat up you can remove it easily.
The Coat
A chic stylish coat that will go with everything is a good buy for this season.
With many styles and colours to choose from, a classic black coat will make a good choice and pair up well with your other fall/winter pieces.
The Underwear
A supportive bra that fits well is an important buy to make!
From the basic black and white to pretty patterns there are so many choices.
Neutral colours will be a good choice for everyday wear.
Accessories……
The Handbag
Add a bag or two to your maternity capsule wardrobe, including an evening bag, something with sparkle and shine for those Christmas and New Year’s parties.
Then add a day bag, something classic in tan leather or black.
Just make sure that the bag you choose is not too heavy.
Jewellery
Add some jewellery to enhance your maternity wear with elegant chokers and tassels to be on trend this winter.
Great for adding to your party outfits, they can add some understated glam.
The Scarf / Wraparound
Warmth and comfort are what you need during the colder months and a good wraparound will be sure to do that.
Splash out on a good cashmere wraparound or something a bit edgier with patterns.
A classic scarf in plaid or camel will also be used again and again.
The Hat
A must-have is a knitted bobble/beanie hat.
Make sure it will coordinate with your coat and scarf, a good quality knitted beanie hat is perfect for everyday winter wear.
Source one from a store or be creative and make one!
There are so many free knitting patterns out there to choose from.
The Gloves
Classic gloves are also a must-have in your collection of accessories.
Classic leather will keep you warm, as well as a more luxury option like these cashmere gloves in grey.
Shoes / Boots
Your feet will swell, so opt for flat shoes when possible.
Pointed flats are a great option for going out for dinner or to a party. Chunkier flats like these Dr.Marten shoes are a great casual option that will look cool with leggings or jeans.
Black suede ankle boots with a block heel will give a casual look a bit of a smart edge, while tan leather Chelsea boots will go with everything.
Knee-high flat tan leather boots also go with everything and look smart, while protecting you from the elements.
