How To Crochet A Cat Ear Hat

Notably, this free crochet cat hat pattern creates a stretchy, textured chunky ribbing fabric that hugs your head with cute cat ears formed during the seaming process.

Abbreviations

The abbreviations are in US terms.

Tip – To convert to UK terms, all of the abbreviations are the same apart from single crochet – in UK terms, this would change to double crochet.

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • blo – back loop only
  • sl -st slip stitch

Crochet the Rectangle

Chain 32, (38, 44, 50, 56).

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from the hook, sc, then sc across the row. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in BLO (back loop only) across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until your rectangle measures 6, (7, 8, 9, 10) inches wide.

Tip: Use a stitch marker to track your rows if needed.

Seam the Hat

Once the rectangle is complete:

Step 1 – Slip stitch to fasten off and cut yarn – weave in any loose ends before starting to seam. Fold the piece in half lengthwise.

FAQs + Extra Tips

→ Is this cat ear hat beginner-friendly?

Yes! It uses only basic crochet stitches like sc and works flat — no shaping or increasing necessary.

→ Can I adjust the size?

Absolutely. Just adjust your starting chain for width and repeat rows for length.

Try a smaller size for children or pets!

→ What yarn is best?

A super chunky yarn makes this hat warm, fast to work up, and gives great definition to the cat ears.

→ What stitch do I use to sew the seams?

Use a whip stitch, mattress stitch, or any seam that gives a neat join.

A yarn needle is best for this.

This pattern will help me practice keeping edges straight, not dropping stitches, etc. My granddog LOVES to wear beanies, so she will benefit from my practice, and so will my daughter and her friends. Love your patterns and hints. Thanks for all you do!
