What Is The Best Yarn For Crochet Sun Hats?
The best yarn for crochet sun hats is typically cotton or a cotton blend, as it’s lightweight, breathable, and holds its shape well—making it ideal for warm-weather wear.
100% cotton yarn like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton or Bernat Handicrafter provides durability and crisp stitch definition, which is especially useful for structured hats.
If you prefer a bit more flexibility and softness, look for cotton-acrylic blends or yarns labeled as DK or worsted weight, depending on the pattern.
For a more natural, straw-like look, raffia yarn is a great choice—it’s lightweight, flexible, and perfect for creating stylish, beach-ready hats with a rustic finish.
Avoid heavy or fuzzy yarns, as they can trap heat and cause the hat to lose its shape in the sun.
How Wide Should The Brim Of A Sun Hat Be?
The width of a sun hat brim can vary depending on the style and level of sun protection you want, but most crochet sun hat brims typically range from 2 to 5 inches wide.
A 2–3 inch brim offers a stylish, casual look with light shade, while a 4–5 inch brim provides more coverage for the face, neck, and shoulders—ideal for sunny days at the beach or garden.
If you’re aiming for a more dramatic wide-brimmed sun hat or floppy sun hat style, you can go even wider, but keep in mind that structure and yarn choice will affect how well the brim holds its shape.

Notes
Skill Level – Basic (Beginner-friendly pattern)
The summer hat crochet pattern is great for beginners.
This is a quick project; you only need an hour or two to make your hat.
You can make a cotton hat for a softer feel, but if you prefer your hat to have a bit more structure, raffia is a great option.
- The stitches used in this pattern are (in US terms) single crochet and increasing by completing two single crochet stitches into one stitch.
- The rounds of single crochet create the hat shape, increasing to shape the width and the brim.
- You will need two hook sizes – a 5 mm (US H/8) and a 6 mm (US J/10 ) crochet hook.
- You will need to change the hook size to the larger hook when completing the brim.

Helpful Tips for Making Your Crochet Summer Hat
1. Choose the Right Yarn:
Opt for a lightweight cotton yarn or raffia yarn to keep your summer hat breathable and comfortable. These fibers also help your hat hold its shape, which is especially important for the brim.
2. Check Your Gauge:
Crochet hats—especially ones that need to fit well around the head—rely on proper gauge. Make a small swatch before starting to ensure your hat will be the right size and not too loose or tight.
3. Use Stitch Markers:
To keep track of your rounds or increases (especially at the crown), stitch markers are your best friend. This helps avoid mistakes and ensures symmetry in shaping.
4. Shape the Brim with Care:
For a structured brim, consider using single crochet stitches and tighter tension. You can also add a round of slip stitches at the end or experiment with stiffening spray if needed for extra structure.
5. Customize the Fit:
If you’re adjusting the size, increase or decrease the number of rounds in the crown or body of the hat. Try the hat on as you go (or measure against a similar hat) to ensure a good fit.
6. Add a Chin Strap or Ribbon:
To help the hat stay in place on windy days, you can add a chin strap, drawstring, or weave a ribbon through the base of the crown for both function and flair.
7. Let It Relax:
Once finished, lay your hat flat or over a bowl/head form to block it gently. This helps even out the stitches and gives it a professional finish.
