Attach The Granny Squares
- Next, you will seam the granny squares to the hat.
- Start by cutting a length of yarn, threading your darning needle, and then attaching the first granny square to the edge of the hat with the right sides facing you.
- Seam through the top loops only.
- When all of the granny squares have been seamed to the crown/top of the hat, you will then need to seam the granny square edges to each other.
- They will also have to be seamed through the top loops only.
- Once you have completed that, you can then continue to work in Color 3 – Denim.
- Push the crochet hook through a ch in one of the granny squares and pull the yarn through, then work rounds of sc until the hat measures 18 cm/7 inches from the top of the hat.
Try it on to see if it is long enough to cover your head; you could add rounds to make it a little longer if you wish.
The Brim
I continued working in Color 3 for a few rounds, then changed to Color 1 because I ran out of yarn.
So this can be completed in one color only or 3 rounds in Color 3 and then the rem rounds in Color 1.
All of the following rounds are worked on the right side in a spiral.
Use 2 strands of yarn together to continue…
Round 1 > *sc in each of the next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc (inc made) rep from * around. (80 sc)
Rounds 2-8 > sc in each sc around.
The brim should measure 5 cm/2 inches from the beg of the brim.
To finish off, join with a sl-st into the beg sc of the round.
Cut yarn and weave in any loose ends.

How Big Should A Crochet Bucket Hat Be?
When making crochet hats, it’s essential to consider the size of both the crown and the brim.
For the crown, aim for a diameter of approx 7 to 8 inches for adults and 6 to 7 inches for children, ensuring a comfortable fit.
As for the bucket hat brim, it should typically measure around 2 to 3 inches in width, giving ample shade and style.
These measurements can vary slightly based on yarn weight, hook size, and individual tension, so experimenting with swatches beforehand is advisable for achieving the right size and shape.
What Yarn Is Best For A Crochet Bucket Hat?
The best yarn for crocheting a bucket hat depends on personal preference and the desired characteristics of the finished product.
Generally, a yarn with a blend of cotton or linen works well for warmer weather, as it’s breathable and lightweight, making it comfortable to wear outdoors.
Worsted weight yarn is commonly used for bucket hats as it strikes a balance between durability and flexibility, allowing for easy manipulation while maintaining the hat’s shape.
Additionally, considering the yarn’s texture and color is crucial for achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality of the hat.
It’s always good to make a gauge swatch before starting your project.
When it comes to color you can make yours in a solid color, or use one main color, and play around with different combinations of your favorite colors for the square motif.
My favorite yarns for summer projects are the We Are Knitters – The Cotton and the Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton.

How Do You Stiffen The Brim Of A Bucket Hat?
To stiffen the brim of a crochet bucket hat, several methods can be used depending on the desired level of stiffness and the materials available.
One common approach is to apply a stiffening solution such as fabric stiffener or diluted white glue to the brim.
This solution is gently brushed or sprayed onto the brim, ensuring even coverage, and then left to dry completely.
Alternatively, sewing a thin wire or plastic tubing along the edge of the brim can provide structure and stiffness.
Another option is to crochet the brim with a tighter stitch pattern or incorporate a stiffening material such as plastic canvas or interfacing into the brim while crocheting.
Experimenting with these techniques allows for customization to achieve the desired stiffness while maintaining the hat’s shape and comfort.
