Tips for Success:
- Choose Colors That Complement Each Other: Pick four colors that either follow a theme (such as pastels, neutrals, or brights) or contrast well for a bold look.
- Consistent Tension: Maintain an even tension throughout the project for a uniform look.
- Baby-Safe Yarn: Always opt for yarns that are soft, washable, and baby-friendly.
Why The Blanket Stitch?
The blanket stitch is a favorite for many crochet projects because of its beautiful texture and simplicity.
It creates a slightly dense fabric, making it perfect for keeping your baby warm while still allowing some airflow.
This stitch is also easy to learn, making it a great option for beginners who want to make something stunning with minimal complexity.
How Do You Adjust The Size Of A Crochet Baby Blanket?
To adjust the size of a crochet baby blanket, follow these simple steps:
- Choose the desired dimensions: Decide on the length and width you want for the blanket. Common baby blanket sizes include 30″ x 30″ for a square or 30″ x 40″ for a rectangular blanket.
- Adjust the starting chain:
- The number of starting chains will determine the width of your blanket. To adjust the size, add or subtract stitches from the starting chain according to the stitch pattern’s repeat. For example, if your pattern uses multiples of 3 (like the blanket stitch), increase or decrease the starting chain in multiples of 3.
- Add more rows for length:
- Once you’ve adjusted the width with the starting chain, crochet additional rows to make the blanket longer. Follow the pattern until you reach the desired length.
- Check your gauge:
- Make sure to check your gauge, as yarn weight and hook size will affect the blanket’s final size. Adjust the hook size if needed to achieve the right dimensions.
By increasing or decreasing the starting chain and adjusting the number of rows, you can easily customize the size of your baby blanket to suit your needs!
What Is The Best Crochet Stitch For A Baby Blanket?
The best crochet stitch for a baby blanket depends on the texture, look, and ease of the project you’re aiming for.
Here are some popular basic crochet stitches that are great for baby blankets:
- Single Crochet (SC): This basic stitch creates a dense, warm, and durable fabric, perfect for keeping babies cozy. It’s simple and beginner-friendly, resulting in a smooth and even texture.
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): This stitch strikes a balance between dense and airy, making it soft yet breathable. It’s great for blankets that need more drape and flexibility.
- Granny Stitch: The classic granny stitch is made up of clusters of double crochets, forming an airy and timeless design. It’s easy to customize and can be worked in a variety of colors.
- Ripple or Chevron Stitch: This stitch creates beautiful wavy or zigzag patterns, adding texture and visual interest to the blanket. It’s a great option for a modern, stylish look.
- Shell Stitch: Shell stitches create a decorative, scalloped texture that is soft and cuddly. It’s a lovely choice for a delicate, lacy baby blanket.
- Blanket Stitch: A combination of single crochets and double crochets, the blanket stitch creates a textured, solid fabric that’s soft and warm. It’s easy to work up and ideal for beginners.
- V-Stitch: This creates a lacy, open design with a lovely drape. It’s great for lighter baby blankets, especially when made with soft, lightweight yarns.
All of these stitches are great options, depending on the style and texture you want for your baby blanket.
What Is The Best Yarn To Use For A Baby Blanket?
The best yarn for a baby blanket should be soft, washable, and safe for sensitive skin.
Here are some of the top yarn options that are a great choice for baby blankets:
1. Acrylic Yarn
- Softness: Many acrylic yarns are incredibly soft and comfortable, perfect for babies.
- Washable: Acrylic is machine-washable and durable, making it easy for parents to clean.
- Variety: Available in a wide range of colors and weights.
- Recommended Brands: Red Heart Baby Soft, Bernat Baby Blanket, Lion Brand Baby Soft.
2. Cotton Yarn
- Soft and breathable: Cotton yarn is soft, natural, and breathable, making it great for warmer climates.
- Hypoallergenic: It’s a natural fiber that’s less likely to cause irritation on a baby’s sensitive skin.
- Absorbent: Cotton yarn absorbs moisture well, making it ideal for swaddle blankets or summer blankets.
- Recommended Brands: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, Premier Cotton Fair.
3. Bamboo Yarn
- Eco-friendly and soft: Bamboo yarn is silky soft, lightweight, and has a lovely sheen.
- Hypoallergenic: Bamboo is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, perfect for babies with sensitive skin.
- Breathable: Great for warm climates as it’s highly breathable.
- Recommended Brands: Premier Bamboo Fair, Lion Brand Truboo.
4. Blends (Acrylic/Cotton or Bamboo/Cotton)
- Best of both worlds: A blend of fibers can provide softness, breathability, and ease of care.
- Durability: Blends often combine the benefits of acrylic (durability and washability) with natural fibers (like cotton or bamboo) for softness.
- Recommended Brands: Lion Brand Feels Like Butta, Bernat Softee Baby.
5. Superwash Merino Wool
- Luxuriously soft: Superwash merino wool is incredibly soft and safe for babies.
- Machine washable: Unlike regular wool, superwash wool can be machine-washed without shrinking or felting.
- Warm: It provides excellent warmth while still being breathable.
- Recommended Brands: Malabrigo Rios, Lion Brand Wool-Ease.
What to Avoid:
- Scratchy or stiff yarns: Avoid rough or stiff yarns like some types of wool or acrylic that aren’t labeled as baby yarn.
- Yarns that shed: Avoid fuzzy or shedding yarns, as fibers can irritate or pose a choking hazard.
Overall, soft acrylic, cotton yarns, bamboo, and blends are the best yarns for baby blankets because they provide comfort, are easy to care for, and are gentle on delicate skin.

Crocheting a baby blanket using the blanket stitch and four different colors is a rewarding and fun project.
The alternating colors and texture will make this blanket stand out as a beautiful gift or keepsake for baby boys or baby girls.
