Sassenach Chevron Mitts Knitting Pattern
Skill Level – Intermediate
Bring a hint of Highland romance to your needles with these fingerless mitts, designed with a distinctive chevron-style cable that echoes traditional Scottish patterns.
Worked in DK yarn on 4 mm (US 6) needles, they offer a snug, comfortable fit with beautiful texture.
Whether made for yourself or someone special, this project is a charming blend of heritage and handcrafted warmth.
Size Information
- Women’s small/medium/large/extra large. In pattern – S (M, L, XL)
- Length from wrist to top of hand – Around 9.5 (9.5, 11, 11) inches / 24 (24, 28, 28) cm.
- Width (laying flat) – Around 3 (3.5, 4, 4) inches / 7.5 (9, 10, 10) cm.
Gauge
- In the round = 22 sts /30 rounds in 4 inches/10 cm of stocking stitch.
- Knitted flat = 21 sts /28 rows in 4 inches/10 cm of stocking stitch.
Supplies
Yarn
- Yarn weight = DK weight yarn (03) / DK / Light Worsted / 8 Ply.
- I used 1 x Rowan Alpaca Soft DK in Trench Coat 202 (50g/125m/136 yds) for the gloves knit in the round in the medium size. For the large and extra large sizes, you will need 2 x balls.
- I used 1 x Drops Puna in Brown 03 (50g/110m) for the gloves knitted flat in the medium size. For the large and extra large sizes, you will need 2 x balls.
Needles
- 4 mm (US 6) Knitting needles.
- In the round = 4 mm (US 6) 9″ or 16″ circular knitting needles.
- You can use DPNs or the magic loop method.
- Cable needle.
Notions
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers
- Stitch Holder
Abbreviations
- CO – Cast on
- BO – Bind off
- Cont – Continue
- C4B – Slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold them at the back of your work, knit the next 2 stitches from the left-hand needle, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
- C4F – Slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold them at the front of your work, knit the next 2 stitches from the left-hand needle, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
- K – Knit
- M1L – Make one stitch left
- M1R – Make one stitch right
- P – Purl
- PM – Place marker
- Rep – Repeat
- SM – Slip marker
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
- 1×1 Ribbing – Knit one stitch, purl one stitch

Pattern Instructions (Straight Needles)
Both gloves are knitted flat back and forth with straight needles.
CO 36, (40, 44, 48) sts.
Work 4 rows in 1×1 ribbing.
Next, work in the following repeat pattern:
- Row 1 (RS): P1 (P2, P3, P4), K4, C4B, C4F, K4, P1 (P2, P3, P4), P1 (P2, P3, P4), K4, C4B, C4F, K4, P1 (P2, P3, P4).
- Row 2 (WS): Purl.
- Row 3: P1 (P2, P3, P4), K2, C4B, K4, C4F, K2, P1 (P2, P3, P4), P1 (P2, P3, P4), K2, C4B, K4, C4F, K2, P1 (P2, P3, P4).
- Row 4: Purl.
- Row 5: P1 (P2, P3, P4), C4B, K8, C4F, P1 (P2, P3, P4), P1 (P2, P3, P4), C4B, K8, C4F, P1 (P2, P3, P4).
- Row 6: Purl
Work rows 1-6 until the piece measures around 9 (9, 10, 10) inches/23 (23, 25, 25 cm), or your desired length.
Work 4 rows in 1×1 ribbing.
BO in 1×1 ribbing.
Leave a yarn tail of around 10 inches for seaming.
Making Up/Finishing
Sew the gloves using the mattress stitch for an invisible seam.
Using a yarn tail from the lower right edge ribbing, thread the yarn needle and seam around 5.5 (5.5, 6, 6) inches/ 14 (14, 15, 15) cm, leave a gap for your thumb (around 2 inches/5 cm), and continue to seam the sides together for a further 2 (2, 2.5, 2.5) inches/5 (5, 6, 6) cm.
Secure and weave in all loose ends.

Pattern Instructions (Circular Needles)
Both gloves are knit in the round.
Right Glove
- CO 36, 40, 44, 48 sts, PM, and join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
- Divide the sts evenly across your needles.
- You may need to use the magic loop technique to knit these gloves in the round on circular needles.
Work in the following pattern:
Round 1: K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Round 2: K2, P4, K8, P4, K2, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Round 3: K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Round 4: K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Round 5: K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Round 6: K 20 sts, K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts.
Work rounds 1-6 until the piece measures around 7 (7, 8, 8) inches/18 (18, 20, 20 cm), or your desired length.
Thumb Hole
- Round 1: K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2, PM, M1L, K1, M1R, PM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts. 38 (42, 46, 50) sts.
- Round 2: K2, P4, K8, P4, K2, SM, K3, SM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts.
- Round 3: K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2, SM, M1L, K3, M1R, SM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts. 40 (44, 48, 52) sts.
- Round 4: K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, SM, K5, SM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts.
- Round 5: K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2, SM, M1L, K5, M1R, SM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts. 42 (46, 50, 54) sts.
- Round 6: K 20 sts, SM, K7, SM, K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts.
- Round 7: K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2, remove marker and place 12 sts onto a stitch holder (remove marker), pick up and knit 2 sts, and K to the end of the round. 44 (48, 52, 56) sts in total, including the 12 sts on the stitch holder.
- Round 8: K2, P4, K8, P4, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 9: K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 10: K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 11: K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 12: K 20 sts, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
Hand
- Work in the following stitch pattern until the piece measures 2.5 (2.5, 3, 3) inches/ 6 (6, 8, 8) cm from the thumb hole or until your desired length.
- Round 1: K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 2: K2, P4, K8, P4, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 3: K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 4: K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 5: K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Round 6: K 20 sts, K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts.
- Work 3 rounds in 1×1 ribbing.
- Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Thumb
- Place the 12 sts from the stitch holder onto the needles.
- Pick up and knit 1 st from the CO edge.
- Knit every round until the thumb measures 2 inches (5 cm).
- Cast off loosely.
Making up
- Weave in any loose ends.
- Place a stitch or two if there is a gap beside the base of the thumb.

Left Glove
- CO 36, 40, 44, 48 sts, pm and join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
- Divide the sts evenly across your needles.

Round 6: K 16 (20, 24, 28) sts, K 20 sts.
Work rounds 1-6 until the piece measures around 7 (7, 8, 8) inches/18 (18, 20, 20 cm), or your desired length.
Thumb Hole
- Round 1: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, PM, M1R, K1, M1L, PM, K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2. 38 (42, 46, 50) sts.
- Round 2: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, SM, K3, SM, K2, P4, K8, P4, K2.
- Round 3: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, SM, M1R, K3, M1L, SM, K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2. 40 (44, 48, 52) sts.
- Round 4: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, SM, K5, SM, K2, P2, K12, P2, K2.
- Round 5: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, SM, M1R, K5, M1L, SM, K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2. 42 (46, 50, 54) sts.
- Round 6: K 15 (19, 23, 27) sts, SM, K7, SM, K 20 sts.
- Round 7: K 10 (14, 18, 22) sts, remove marker and place 12 sts onto a stitch holder (remove marker), pick up and knit 2 sts, and K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2, to the end of the round. 44 (48, 52, 56) sts in total, including the 12 sts on the stitch holder.
- Round 8: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, P4, K8, P4, K2.
- Round 9: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, P2, C4B, K4, C4F, P2, K2.
- Round 10: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, P2, K12, P2, K2.
- Round 11: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, C4B, K8, C4F, K2.
- Round 12: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K 20 sts.
Hand
- Work in the following stitch pattern until the piece measures 2.5 (2.5, 3, 3) inches/ 6 (6, 8, 8) cm from the thumb hole or until your desired length.
- Round 1: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, P4, C4B, C4F, P4, K2.
- Round 2: K 12 (16, 20, 24) sts, K2, P4, K8, P4, K2.
