How To Make A Gift For Your Man He Will Love!

If you want to make something for your man that he will love this winter…then make him a knitted bobble hat!

I wanted to make and share a men’s hat pattern that is really easy for any beginner knitters, this pattern uses basic techniques, including; knit and purl stitches.

Simple to make in an easy ribbed stitch, this free men’s hat knitting pattern will knit up a hat in a couple of hours.

You can make the matching cowl too, just to make sure he stays nice and cosy.

I made this set for my husband after he was complaining that his other (bought) hat wasn’t tight enough around his ears, letting the cold wind in.

So this hat has a tighter fit around the head and now he wears it frequently.

Made with a chunky super soft yarn, it has already had compliments from friends and family!

easy knit hat

Look no further for the perfect men’s ribbed beanie and matching cowl.

This stretchy hat will fit a wide variety of head sizes and can be made in any length to create a short fitted hat or a slouchy longer beanie style.

Perfect for a brisk walk in the park with the dog or coffee with friends in town.

I made the hat using Delfino (Delfino Μοντέρνο) yarn, which I found in a local yarn shop here in Corfu, in colour-way 6260.

I knit with two strands together as this made it suitable for size 8 mm (US 11) needles.

You can use other yarns as a substitute, and of course, any yarns that are suitable for size 8 mm (US 11) will be perfect.

I knit this hat on circular needles, so there was no seaming involved, just a few loose ends to sew in at the end.

Mens hat

The hat pattern is easy to follow, knitting in the round on circular needles, you could knit this hat on DPN’s if it is your preference.

The hat uses basic stitches – knit and purl, to knit ribbing for the main body of the hat.

If you are a beginner it will also introduce you to shaping through simple decreases.

This easy hat knitting pattern is great for any beginners who are learning how to knit, as it is a great project for learning the basic knitting stitches.

The hat size can also be adapted if you want to make it smaller or larger, just measure the circumference of the recipients head and adjust the number of stitches you cast on.

If you would like to make more knitted items for men, please take a look at the other patterns in the men’s knitting pattern library.

Men’s Knitted Hat Pattern

Materials >

Yarn in dark grey – I used a brand called Delfino (Delfino Μοντέρνο) which I found in a local yarn shop here in Corfu, in colour-way 6260.

I used around 2 balls for the hat and 4 balls for the cowl. I also used 2 strands of yarn together, so it would have a chunkier look.

Any yarn suitable for 8mm (US 11) needles will be ok or if you use 2 strands of DK (for 4mm needles (US size 6) yarn knit together.

A good alternative for a DK (4mm / US 6) yarn would be Rowan pure wool worsted in the colour-way Granite 111.

A good alternative for a chunkier yarn suitable for the 8mm/US11 or 9mm/US13 needles would be Lion Brand wool ease thick and quick in Charcoal 149.

      Hello Pat!

Can you measure the length of his head? or a hat that he has worn? So that you know how long to make it. When you have your desired length – possibly 9"? you can then decrease -> Next Row: K2TOG / P2TOG – decrease in rib / Next Row: Knit / Next Row: K2TOG / Cut a long tail of yarn and thread through remaining stitches. Pull tight together and secure.

If you need any help with the decrease, please visit the knitting basics page, with video tutorials to help. I hope that helps! Thanks for reading 🙂
