Christmas Elf Dog Bandana Knitting Pattern

Before You Get Started

A quick overview before you cast on:

  • Skill level: Easy/confident beginner
  • Construction:
    • The triangle is worked flat from the tip upward in garter stitch.
    • Red and white stripes are created by changing colours every two rows.
    • A fluffy green ruffle is picked up and knit around all three edges.
    • Two simple garter ties are knit flat and sewn to the top corners.
  • Yarn held double:
    • For the red and white stripes, you’ll hold one strand of DK yarn together with one strand of sparkle yarn.
    • For the green ruffle, you’ll use just the sparkle yarn on its own for a lighter, frillier edge.
  • Customising:
    • Work fewer or more increase rows for a shorter or deeper triangle.
    • Swap the colours for different holiday themes (candy cane, Santa, Grinchy greens…).
  • Safety note:
Always supervise your dog while wearing any accessory and make sure the bandana is tied comfortably (not tight) around their neck.

  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure

Sizes

The pattern is written for Small (Medium, Large, Extra Large).

The triangle width is measured across the top edge before the ruffle is added:

  • Small: 44 sts ≈ 11″ / 28 cm wide
  • Medium: 52 sts ≈ 13″ / 33 cm wide
  • Large: 60 sts ≈ 15″ / 38 cm wide
  • Extra Large: 68 sts ≈ 17″ / 43 cm wide

Choose the size based on your dog’s neck and chest size, and how deep you’d like the bandana to hang.

Gauge

  • 16 sts / 8 rows = 4″ x 4″ (10 x 10 cm)
  • In garter stitch, using 5 mm / US 8 needles.

Gauge is measured after blocking.

For a dog bandana, it’s not super critical, but if your stitches are much looser or tighter, your finished triangle will come out larger or smaller than the measurements given.

Triangle Shape (Striped Section)

With Yarn A (White – held double as described), cast on 2 sts.

  • Row 1 (RS): K.
  • Row 2 (WS): K.
  • Row 3 (RS): KFB in each stitch. (4 sts)
  • Row 4 (WS): K.

Change to Yarn B (Red – held double as described).

Increase Section

  • Row 5 (RS): KFB, K to last st, KFB. (Increase 2 sts)
  • Row 6 (WS): K.

Repeat Rows 5–6, continuing to:

  • Work in garter stitch (knit every row)
  • Increase 2 sts on every RS row (Row 5 pattern), and
  • Change colours every two rows for stripes
    • 2 rows in white (Yarn A),
    • 2 rows in red (Yarn B),
    • Repeat, until you have: 44 (52, 60, 68) sts for S (M, L, XL).

When you reach your size stitch count:

  • Next RS row: Bind off knitwise loosely.
  • Break yarn and weave in Yarn A and Yarn B ends.

Colour Change Tip

When changing colours, carry the unused yarn neatly up the side of your work instead of cutting it each time:

  • Twist the two strands together at the edge every couple of rows.
  • This keeps the edge tidy, avoids holes, and dramatically reduces the number of ends you’ll need to weave in at the end.

Ruffle Edge (Yarn C – Green)

With RS facing, using Yarn C (Green) and a 5 mm / US 8 circular needle, pick up and knit stitches evenly around all 3 edges of the triangle:

  • Work approximately 1 stitch into each garter ridge along both sides.
  • Work 1 stitch into each bound-off stitch along the top edge.

You will now have a large number of stitches on your circular needle – that’s what gives you a nice full ruffle.

Tip: Use a circular needle long enough to hold all the stitches comfortably.
If they feel crowded, use the magic loop method to slide stitches around the cord as you work.

Once stitches are picked up:

  • Row 1 (RS): K.
  • Row 2 (WS): K.
  • Row 3 (RS): KFB across the entire row (increase in every stitch to create the ruffle).
  • Row 4: K.
  • Row 5: P.

Bind off loosely to keep the ruffle nice and flared.

Break yarn and weave in all remaining ends.

You can block lightly if desired to smooth the triangle and help the ruffle sit beautifully.

Neck Ties (Make 2 – in Yarn B / Red)

These are worked flat in garter stitch and sewn to the top corners so you can knot the bandana comfortably behind your dog’s neck.

For each tie:

With Yarn B (Red – you can use it single or held double as preferred):

  • CO 42 (46, 50, 54) sts for S (M, L, XL).
  • Rows 1–2: K.
  • Bind off knitwise.

Make a second tie the same way.

Finishing the Ties

  • With RS facing, sew one short edge of each tie securely to the top corners of the bandana triangle.
  • Make sure the ties extend out from the neck edge so they can be easily wrapped around and tied.
  • Weave in all ends.

Give the bandana a light block if needed, let it dry, and then…It’s ready for your festive pup!

FAQ

Is this bandana beginner-friendly?

Yes! The entire bandana is worked in garter stitch (knit every row), with simple KFB increases and easy colour changes every two rows.

If you’re comfortable casting on, knitting, binding off, and picking up stitches, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Do I have to use the sparkle yarn?

No—if sparkles aren’t your thing (or your dog prefers a more low-key look), you can:

  • Use only the DK yarn for the red and white stripes (no held-double strands).
  • Use a plain green DK yarn for the ruffle instead of the sparkle yarn.

Just keep in mind that changing the yarn may slightly affect gauge and texture, but for a dog bandana, that’s usually not a big issue.

Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of DK?

You can, but you might need to:

  • Adjust your needle size (try 4.5–5 mm / US 7–8)
  • Or cast on fewer increase repeats so the bandana doesn’t turn out too large.

If you’re substituting, it’s a good idea to knit a quick gauge swatch and compare your measurements to the size info in this pattern.

How do I make the bandana longer or shorter?

You can easily customise the size:

  • To make it deeper/larger, keep repeating Rows 5–6 until you reach your desired width (more stitches).
  • To make it shallower/smaller, stop increasing before the stated stitch count for your chosen size.

Just remember that changing the number of increase rows will also change the width along the neck edge.

Can I knit the bandana without the ruffle?

Absolutely. If you prefer a simpler look:

  • Knit the triangle as written, then
  • Skip the ruffle and simply add the neck ties to the corners.

You’ll have a classic striped dog bandana without the elf collar frill.

How do I care for the finished bandana?

Check the labels of your chosen yarns, but in general:

  • Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent.
  • Lay flat to dry, reshaping the ruffle and triangle as it dries.
  • Avoid high heat or harsh spinning, as that can distort the shape and affect the sparkle fibres.
