The Design Inspiration
The style of this hat was inspired by the ribbed brown hat Roger is wearing in Outlander season 4, which looks like a traditional seaman’s hat.
Knit in 1×1 ribbing instead of 2×2 ribbing – this has a tighter rib-knit fabric.
Great to gift, this hat is super easy to knit and will be well received by loved ones, friends, and charities.
The yarn I used…
I made the hat twice using different yarns and different needle sizes.
The brown hat is knit using Rowan Kid Classic yarn in Bitter Sweet and knit on size 5.5 mm (US 9) 16″ circular needles.
The second yarn I used was The Petite Wool from We Are Knitters in Ivory and knit on size 6 mm (US 10) 16″ circular needles.
They both knit up quite quickly and used only one skein of yarn each.

The Supplies You Need
Yarn
- Aran/worsted/10 ply. 50g (for the 5.5mm (US 9) needles).
- I used 1 x Rowan Kid Classic in Bitter Sweet 866 (50g/140m/153yds). This is the brown hat.
- The hat was also made in 1 x The Petite Wool (100g/140m/142yds) from We Are Knitters in Ivory.
- This is a bulky/chunky/12-ply yarn.
- The Petite Wool requires being knit with 6mm (US 10) 16″ circular knitting needles.
Needles
- 5.5mm (US 9) 16″ circular knitting needles.
- Please note – you may have to change your needles for the decrease of the hat if working on the circulars becomes too tight.
- This would mean using a set of size 5.5 mm double-pointed needles (DPNs).
- If you do not have those, you could use a 60cm/24″ cable and use the magic loop technique.
- To knit the hat using The Petite Wool from We Are Knitters, you will need to use 6mm (US 10) 16″ circular knitting needles.
- I used my set of interchangeable knitting needles.
