Christmas Tree Decorations

The Christmas tree decoration pattern is easy to follow, knit flat on straight needles.

You can use up leftover yarns in your stash and make lots of mini trees in different colours.

The Christmas tree ornament pattern is great for any beginners who are learning how to knit, as it is a great project for learning new stitches.

Mini Christmas Tree Knitting Pattern
Knit Christmas tree decorations with this easy free pattern.

  • Scraps of DK/light weight yarn 03 yarn – in Green


  • 4 mm (US 6) Knitting needles
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Toy stuffing or wadding
  • Buttons – red/white
  • Fabric – for heart decoration
  • Embroidery thread – red
  • String or ribbon to hang


Make 2 pieces:

  1. Cast on 4
  2. Purl one row
  3. Knit one row
  4. Continue until piece measures 1 inch
  5. With right side facing cast on 6
  6. Knit
  7. With the wrong side facing cast on 6 stitches
  8. Purl
  9. Knit
  10. Purl
  11. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  12. Purl
  13. Knit
  14. Purl
  15. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  16. Purl
  17. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  18. Purl
  19. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  20. Purl
  21. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  22. Purl
  23. K2Tog knit till last 2 stitches K2tog
  24. Purl
  25. K2Tog / K2tog
  26. Purl
  27. Cast off 2.

Making Up >

  1. When you have both tree pieces you can decorate how you want, by adding buttons or stitching a fabric heart.
  2. Place right sides on the outside and stitch with a decorative blanket stitch around the edges.
  3. Leaving a gap to stuff, place the ribbon or string to hang at the top of the tree and secure when you sew.
  4. Stuff the tree decoration and stitch to close the gap.
  5. Your decoration should now be ready to hang on the Christmas tree!
