Yarn & Supplies

- 1 x skein of Kartopu Melange Wool 100g (170m) in grey M1009
- 1 x skein of Kartopu Melange Wool 100g (170m) in pink MK135

Yarn Weight Guide (+ Conversion Chart)
Needles
- 6 mm (US 10) 16″ circular needles
Please note – you may have to change your needles for the decreases of the hat if working on the circulars becomes too tight.
This would mean using a set of size 6mm double-pointed needles (DPNs).
If you do not have those, you could use a 60cm/24″ cable and use the magic loop technique. (View Tutorial – Magic loop knitting | step by step)

FAQs
1. What size should I knit for a baby hat?
Baby hats come in different sizes depending on age.
Always check the baby’s head measurement for the best fit.
2. How much yarn do I need for a baby hat?
Most baby hats take less than one skein of worsted/aran yarn (about 50g).
3. What’s the best yarn for baby hats?
Choose a soft, non-itchy yarn that feels good against delicate skin.
Many knitters prefer cotton blends, acrylic, or superwash wool since they’re gentle and easy to wash.
Learn more about fibers here. – Types Of Yarn Explained: A Guide To Different Fibers
4. Do I have to knit baby hats in the round?
No, some patterns are knit flat and seamed.
However, knitting in the round (as in this pattern) avoids seams, making the hat smoother and more comfortable for babies.
Check out a flat knit baby hat here. – How To Knit A Baby Hat (Simple With Straight Needles)
5. How do I keep baby hats from slipping off?
Make sure to use ribbing (like K2, P2) at the brim — it creates stretch and helps the hat stay snug on the baby’s head.
6. How do I make the hat slouchier or shorter?
- For a slouchier look: knit more rounds before starting crown decreases.
- For a shorter hat: reduce the total length before shaping.
7. How long does it take to knit one hat?
Most knitters can finish a hat in 4–6 hours, making this a fun weekend project.
