What Is An Asymmetrical Shawl?
- An asymmetrical shawl is a type of shawl or wrap that is designed with an uneven or non-symmetrical shape.
- Really asymmetrical shawls are triangle shawls that are off-center.
- And unlike traditional rectangular shawls or triangular shawls that have a symmetrical shape, an asymmetrical shawl has a distinctive shape that varies in width and length across its edges.
- The construction of an asymmetrical shawl shape design typically involves increasing or decreasing stitches on one edge, resulting in an angled or diagonal shape.
- This irregular shape adds an element of modernity and visual interest to your simple shawl, making it a unique and eye-catching accessory.
- Asymmetrical shawls offer versatility in how they can be draped and worn.
- Their unconventional shape allows for different styling options, such as draping it over one shoulder, wrapping it around the neck in a unique way, or creatively positioning the longer edge to create an interesting silhouette.
- These shawls are popular among knitters who seek to create contemporary and fashion-forward accessories.
- They provide an opportunity to showcase unique stitch patterns, color combinations, and innovative design elements.
- At first glance, they may seem difficult to knit, however, they are really simple and fun to create.

What Are The Dimensions Of A Standard Asymmetrical Shawl?
The dimensions of a standard asymmetrical shawl can vary depending on the specific design and pattern.
Since asymmetrical shawls are intentionally designed to have an uneven or non-symmetrical shape, there is no specific set of dimensions that define a standard size.
However, here are some general guidelines:
- Width: The width of an asymmetrical shawl can vary significantly. It may start with a narrow width on one end and gradually widen towards the opposite end. The width can range from approximately 12 inches (30 cm) to 24 inches (61 cm) or more, depending on the desired look and style of the shawl.
- Length: The length of an asymmetrical shawl is typically measured from the longest edge to the shortest edge. This can range from approximately 60 inches (152 cm) to 80 inches (203 cm) or longer. The length can be customized based on personal preference, desired coverage, and the overall look you want to achieve.
It’s important to note that these dimensions are approximate and can vary based on the specific pattern, stitch gauge, yarn weight, and individual customization.

The stitch pattern used in this design
This shawl is knit in garter stitch with a repeat row of dropped stitches that create holes in the knitted fabric.
The shawl is knit from one end to the other.
This shawl needed 4 x skeins of Martin’s Lab Yarn – Comfy Merino/color Shades of Water.
A gorgeous yarn that’s perfect for an asymmetrical or a triangular shawl.
This yarn was knit with two strands together, for a lighter knit you could knit with a single strand and use 2 skeins of the yarn.
These airy shawls are great projects for the summer months.

Finishing and Blocking
You may wish to block your shawl, you can do that as follows:
Make sure all ends are woven in using a tapestry needle or method of choice.
Gently block by filling a sink or water basin with lukewarm water, add a small amount of rinse less wool wash.
Place the items in the water and gently massage out any air bubbles.
Drain water, gently squeezing out any excess water from the item, then roll in a towel, and stomp on the towel roll to remove any more excess water.
Lay the item out on a towel to approx. finished wingspan measurements and allow to dry completely.
