Super Size Your Knits

Knitting with large needles and super bulky or jumbo yarn is a great way to make something fast!

From blankets to sweaters, you can make many things using thick yarn.

One of my favorite yarns to knit with is The Wool from We Are Knitters (a jumbo-weight yarn); it creates quick knits.

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick is a super bulky weight yarn that creates amazing results, from a scarf to cable knits.

Whatever you want to make to stay warm and cozy, there are plenty of patterns in this roundup to choose from.

FAQ

1. What is super bulky yarn?

Super bulky yarn (category 6) is thick yarn used to create heavier, chunky knit projects.

It was previously the thickest yarn before jumbo yarn (category 7) was introduced.

2. What size knitting needles do I need for super bulky weight yarn?

For super bulky weight yarn (often labeled as weight category 6), the recommended knitting needle size is usually:

  • US 11–17, 8 mm – 12.75 mm.
  • US 11–13 (8–9 mm): Best for tighter, denser fabrics (like hats, mittens, and slippers).
  • US 15–17 (10–12.75 mm): Best for looser, drapier fabrics (like scarves, blankets, and oversized sweaters).

3. Can I knit super bulky patterns with two strands of thinner yarn held together?

Yes — you can knit super bulky patterns by holding two (or more) strands of thinner yarn together, and it’s actually a common yarn substitution method.

When you knit with multiple strands held together, they behave like a single, thicker yarn.

Two strands of bulky (weight 5) ≈ super bulky (weight 6)

Two strands of worsted/aran (weight 4) ≈ bulky (weight 5)

Three or four strands of worsted (weight 4) ≈ super bulky (weight 6)

4. Is chunky yarn good for beginners?

Yes, chunky yarn is great for beginners.

The larger, more defined stitches make it simpler to spot mistakes and follow patterns.

Because the yarn is thicker, projects knit up quickly, which is motivating when you’re starting out.

You’ll use larger needles (US 11–17 / 8–12.75 mm), which are easier for many new knitters to handle.

Tip: Chunky yarn can feel heavier on the needles, so short circular needles or straight needles no longer than 14″ can make it more comfortable.

5. Do chunky knits stretch out?

They can, especially if they’re made with loosely spun yarn, heavy fibers, or knit at a loose gauge.

The weight of chunky yarn pulls on the stitches.

Gravity affects heavier garments like sweaters and cardigans more than accessories like hats.

6. How do you prevent stretching?

Knit at the recommended gauge or slightly tighter.

Choose yarns with good elasticity (wool blends rather than 100% cotton or bamboo).

Store garments folded rather than hanging.

Block gently — avoid over-stretching during wet blocking.

  2. Thanks for the pattern looks like fun! For the chunky knit dog sweater pattern – do you have instructions for how to leave a hole in the top (below the collar) for a harness leash attachment?

    1. Hello Nancy,
I don’t have the instructions in there for that – but an easy way to make a hole is to create a yarn over where you want the hole to be.
      I hope that helps,
      Louise
